A most unusual and rare example of a Marriage chest featuring four pairs of painted portraits, each representing a female and a male person. The bust-length portraits are all depicted in profile facing each other, except the two male figures on the front panel, who are shown in three quarter profile.
The represented personages look to belong to nobility, judging the costuming, jewelry and demeanor. The finely detailed portraits are “framed “ in trompe l’oeil architecturally painted frames. The interior of the lid shows remains of old labels, unfortunately too far deteriorated to reveal the history of this rare piece.
